Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders are common medical problems that negatively affect your lifestyle and cause various symptoms. More than 30 million people in the United States are affected by thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Although thyroid disorders are incredibly common, many people don't know about them or how to manage their condition. Thyroid disorders affect the thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped organ in the front of the neck that produces hormones that control the body's metabolism. The thyroid gland also helps regulate body temperature. Thyroid disorders can cause many symptoms, including weight gain, fatigue, and depression.

You need to know more about thyroid disorders and their causes and treatments to make sure you get the right help as soon as possible.

There are many treatment options for thyroid disorders. These include thyroid hormone replacement therapy, anti-thyroid medications, and other options.

Faith Medical Clinic in Canyon, Texas offers a range of treatments for thyroid disorders. Call us today.

Common Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders are a number of conditions that affect the thyroid gland, located at the front of the neck, and control metabolism and body temperature. There are many different thyroid disorders, with symptoms ranging from elevated hormone levels to an inability to produce enough thyroid hormones.

Hypothyroidism

Also known as underactive thyroid, it is the most common thyroid disorder. An underactive thyroid gland produces insufficient thyroid hormones.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism vary and depend on the severity of the condition. The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, feeling cold all the time, dry skin, constipation, hair loss, and dry, brittle nails. Menstrual irregularities and decreased sex drive are also among the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism

This is a different type of thyroid disorder. In this case, the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. The most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism are rapid weight loss, mood swings, restlessness, irritability, sleep disturbances, and trembling of the hands.

Despite these differences, both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism reduce your body's ability to regulate key functions such as body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Because thyroid problems are relatively common in women, those who are over 40 should talk to their doctor regularly to ensure proper thyroid function.

Many cases of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism go undiagnosed because they do not cause any symptoms. Many people do not realize they have a problem until experiencing unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, and hair loss.

Our experienced staff can help you diagnose and treat both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. At Faith Medical Clinic, we can help you learn more about these conditions and how to treat them.

Thyroid disorders can also be the result of immune reactions. Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease are two such conditions.

Hashimoto's Disease

It's an autoimmune disease, meaning your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland. Hashimoto's syndrome can lead to insufficient production of thyroid hormones. It causes a variety of symptoms similar to hypothyroidism, including fatigue and sluggishness, and increased sensitivity to cold.

Graves' Disease

The disease is another autoimmune disorder in which high thyroid hormone levels are produced. This disease causes similar symptoms to hyperthyroidism, including irregular heartbeat and tremors. Grave's disease is treated with medications that reduce thyroid hormone production or surgery.

We will help you get the right diagnosis for your autoimmune thyroid problems at our family medicine clinic. We offer a wide range of treatments for thyroid disorders. Get in touch now to learn more about our therapies.

Thyroid Nodules

If you have a thyroid nodule, there is no need to panic. Most thyroid nodules are benign and usually have no cause for concern. However, sometimes your doctor will perform a biopsy of the thyroid nodules to determine if further treatment is needed.

Thyroid Disorders in Children

Symptoms of thyroid disorders in children often include poor growth, dry skin, constipation, and fatigue. These symptoms can vary greatly depending on the type of disorder. If you suspect that your child has a thyroid disorder, you should talk to our specialists right away.
